Best of Cebu 2014: Quick Bites

Snacks aren’t unusual in a day in the lives of many Filipinos. We like to munch between meal times and sometimes we like to munch just because!

I’ve just had the opportunity to taste these heavenly cupcakes by Phoebe’s Cupcakery. Scarlette is mine and everyone else’s favorite!

Going to a movie, casually chatting with friends or even being alone, Potato Corner is every Cebuano’s go-to fries. Potato Corner is in every corner of every mall, sike! But really, they can be easily found inside SM, Ayala and other malls in Cebu.

potcorner2

Paul didn’t want to share with me. Haha He’s so selfish with these amazing fries.

Maitre Chocolatier may not be my type of food shop (read: I’m not fond of cocoa) but they serve amazing desserts and my favorite, the chocolate fondue. You can get this in milk chocolate, dark chocolate and white chocolate (!!!). Maitre Chocolatier is located in Ayala Terraces.

My summer tummy of 2014 is filled with Strawberry Mango crepes. I love love love Crazy Crepes. They have just the right amount of softness to their crepes, I don’t like it when they’re too thin and become crunchy. They have many more combinations, feel free to visit them at SM Northwing near Cabalen.

Best of Cebu 2014: Filipino Cuisine At Its Best

If you visit Cebu or the Philippines in general, it’d be a sin not to try our native dishes. I would say it’s one of the most delicious and unique cuisines in the world. Quite underrated too. Or maybe I’m biased, your choice to find out.

pb_bs13_smaller

Lantaw Native Restaurant has been conquering Cebu for a few years now, around 2 I think but they’ve branched out to more amazing locations such as the SRP seaside as seen on the photo above.

pb_bs12_smaller

It was beyond gorgeous eating with this view.

pb_bs15_smaller

Their main area.

pb_bs14

They also have a grill station area.

They also have one in Cordova called the Lantaw Floating Restaurant with two covered areas and an open one where it’d be beautiful to dine under the night sky. Not during daytime though, the sun would burn you alive as seen below.

lantaw1

Not a bad out of focus one. The Cebu skyline behind us, just across Lantaw Cordova.

If you click on one of the photos below, it’ll directly connect you to Lantaw’s Facebook page and menu. As much as I’d like to take photos of our food, I couldn’t possibly give justice to it.

Lantaw is ideal for any casual occasions such as birthdays or reunions. There’s a third Lantaw branch that I have yet to conquer which is in Busay. A good view of the whole Cebu awaits you if decide to go. Dining with a view is definitely one of Cebu’s specialties.

While Lantaw offers most of the Philippine’s specialties, Matias Barbecue restaurant gives you the best barbecue and puso (hanging rice) combo. Puso is unique to Cebu and is considered a great innovation. It is definitely a convenient way of cooking and packing rice. Given that beaches are easily accessed, puso is everyone’s go-to rice type to pack for spontaneous beach trips.

In Matias, you don’t have to worry about your budget at all. A meal for two is good for Php 150.00 to 300.00. Affordable and delicious!

The place is full all the time so if you’re bringing a car, best go early to have a parking space. For those who doesn’t, simply choose your meat from a variety of pork barbecues, chicken barbecues of different chicken parts, etc. You let the people behind the grill cook them for you and find a table. Once you get a table, you have to reiterate the meat choices you had to a waiter/waitresses for them to list it down and for you to wait until it’s ready. They will then serve your food and you’re all set! Add a drink and dig right in!

Best of Cebu 2014: Perfect for Date Nights

Cebu is not just filled with fun and sand and amazing beaches. At night time, city lights is just as beautiful most especially when you’re on a higher altitude, eating a delicious steak and chilling with wine in your hand.

One of Cebuano’s favorite restaurant this year would be Anzani. It is situated at Nivel Hills, Lahug which gives you a very nice view of the city during dinner. You have to reserve days before to get a table though as it’s usually full.

anzani1

Can you see their humongous servings? It would definitely fill you up fast. The price range is of the higher range as well but given the amount they give you, the quality and taste, you’ll then understand.

Behind them is Bellini, where it’d be nice to chill with drinks after the full meal in Anzani. As much as I would like to capture the beauty of the city lights, the camera wouldn’t let me give it justice so I might as well give you the surprise and let you have your moment of awe if you decide to visit.

Although Cebu can get quite busy, there are still places you can have your romantic dinners. Tinder Box is one of them. They have an amazing wine selection as well as a good variety of dishes. Tinder Box can be found just beside The Crossroads.

They were doing their renovations when we went but they’re done now and it’s immaculate. The place is just full on white with great interiors. It’d be really nice for a date night. Price range for two would be Php 1000.00 – 2000.00.

From restaurants with a view and in the middle of the city light, having your date night in a mall is not impossible. Canvas Bistro Bar Gallery is in Ayala Terraces and definitely not a new place but it’s quite underrated. With their smart casual setting and Modern Australian cuisine, a lovely dinner is sure to have.

canvas2

We had mostly squid. And everything was so good.

canvas1

canvas3

They have one of the greatest service I’ve had. It’s not difficult to have friendly servers but it’s really different when it’s someone who knows their cuisine. Australian cuisine is not something you get to see often around Cebu as well. You get to observe them work on your food as they have a semi-open kitchen while you wait for your tasty meal. Their price range is just as reasonable as the ones mentioned above.

We’ve done heights, busy area and malls, now we’ve come to IT Park. It’s a famous area in Cebu where most IT companies have set up their businesses. With BPOs and software development companies, restaurants and little chill shops have also been established around the park. One of Paul’s favorite is Irie Gastropubliko. It’s fairly new but quite famous.

Gastropubs abroad are usually known for their good food and good beer, and I can say it’s the same for Irie (minus the beer). Their price range is higher than most restaurants around IT Park and most people find it annoying that they have service charge on top of their already expensive menu (tipping is not unknown but not a big deal as well in the Filipino culture).

irie3

Bacon Arugula salad for Php 320.00. Arugula, Bacon, Blue Cheese and Pepper-Cranberry Vinaigrette. The vinaigrette was really amazing but if you’re not used to blue cheese, you might be put off with it’s smell. However, the cheese is a fine complement to arugula.

irie1

Angus Steak Kebabs for Php 340.00. You can add another skewer for Php 280.00. The kebab is put on top of buttered rice and is served with a garlic yoghurt dip. There is so much flavor in this dish and the yoghurt dip neutralizes it properly which makes the combination brilliant.

irie2

A favorite by everyone and Paul is a dish called Fat Bastard III for Php 395.00. An overnight marinated, dry-rubbed pork chop, shitake mushroom, french beans with mustard cream sauce. Yum! Sinful but yum!

They serve local and import craft beers ranging from Php 200.00 to 250.00.

That was Paul and I’s favorite places this 2014 that we’d go on again for romantic dates and/or a full-on eat out sesh. Where would you go for your date nights?

Best of Cebu 2014: Asian Cuisine all around Cebu

Continuing our Best of series these last few days of 2014 and my obsession with Asian cuisine, I’ll give you 5 more restaurants I’ve raved about this year!

First off is Azabu Restaurant near JY Square, Lahug. When Paul and I went back in April, it was still a very underrated restaurant. It’s nice to see that it shot up to the number 1 restaurant for 2014 in Cebu. It is unsurprising that everyone now loves Azabu as they had really good food and really good service as well.

Everything was just impressive! This meal was Php 1700.00 in total, not bad for brilliant Japanese food.

The Korean influence is also slowly converting from KPop to KFood. I’m quite surprised a lot of Filipinos have adapted and welcomed kimchi. If you’re new to Korean food, you probably won’t like it at first but give it more chances and you’ll love it and crave for it. The unique thing about Korean meals is the numerous side dishes you get to have along with the premium meat. Chosun Galbi is just one of the good Korean restaurants in town. You get to eat inside little private rooms and grill all you want. You have to try their beef galbi, it is such a flavorful beef barbecue. And don’t forget to eat it with kimchi wrapped in lettuce. A meal in Chosun Galbi good for two ranges around Php 1000.00 – 1500.00.

Up next is another personal favorite. I’ve featured Tajimaya in my previous post but if you want to go further, Tokyo Table is where it’s at. Tokyo Table offers more than charcoal grilled meals but also dishes from different Asian cuisine. They have sushi, kimchi, siomai, tempura, rolls, salad, desserts and many more. It’s a great buffet which comes with a price of Php 650.00 on weekdays and Php 750.00 on weekends. Quite hefty, but worth it.

Tokyo Table is located in City Time Square, behind ParkMall in Mandaue.

Miga Korean Restaurant is where you want to go for an all you can eat Korean buffet. It is situated across University of Southern Philippines in Lahug. It gives off a very homey vibe as it is like a house turned into a restaurant kind of place. For a price of around Php 450.00, you’re set to eat all the meat and kimchi you want.

Lastly, if you’re in SM Northwing, you’ll find Tempura Grill. It’s very rare to have grill places around malls because of the smoke and such so when I learned that Tempura Grill offers it inside SM, it is definitely a win win situation. It is very accessible and inexpensive! My family would go on Sundays and would only pay around Php 1500.00 for 5 people. They offer yakiniku packages complete with meat, bacon wrapped asparagus, tuna, and squid balls which you yourself would cook. Paul and I, however, tried their bentos and they were also impressive. A full bento for around Php 250.00 gives you a happy tummy and a happy wallet!

Where in Cebu have you been getting your Asian food fix?

Best of Cebu 2014: Asian Cuisine at The Crossroads

Hello my loves! I hope you had a lovely Christmas! Or holidays if you’re not celebrating. It has been a good year and I want to feature my favorite Cebu restaurants for 2014.

Chinese cuisine is such a big player in the food scene for Cebu. Filipinos are greatly influenced by the Chinese but recently, Japanese and Korean cuisines as well as other Asian cuisines are becoming popular. Before 2015 rolls on with its new restaurants, it’d be nice to see what you’ve missed the past few years, more especially this 2014!

One of my personal favorite, somewhere I would go to repeatedly and not get sick of, is Cebu Sumibi Yakiniku Tajimaya Charcoal Grill. Phew, that was quite a mouthful! You can find two branches of Tajimaya, one at The Crossroads and one in Mactan Marina Mall.

tajimaya3

Tajimaya has a lot of ala carte food choices but I always opt for the eat all you can buffet which consists of unlimited pre-marinated beef, pork, chicken, sausages, and shrimp for Php 450.00. There are lots of charcoal grill places now around Cebu and I’ve tried most of them and I have to say, Tajimaya serves the best meat quality and taste.

tajimaya2

phatpho12

They serve lettuce with sesame dressing as sides for the eat all you can meat package. Rice and drinks aren’t included but you can always ditch the rice to give more room for meat. I, for one, needs rice to neutralise the protein I want to eat so I do order rice for Php 60.00 and mango juice for about a hundred.

tajimaya1

One of Paul’s first meals in Cebu, and his last as well. We just can’t get enough of Tajimaya.

tajimaya4

P.h.a.t. Pho Vietnamese Kitchen is also a fairly new restaurant at The Crossroads. I have to say that it is a unique restaurant as Vietnamese cuisine is very rare to find around Cebu.

phatpho6

It’s not a very spacious restaurant and was designed to have quick meals beside the open kitchen. It is always jam packed so Paul and I was very lucky to find one weekday evening with barely any people. I suggest, if you want to try Phat Pho, go on weekdays as they are very busy during Friday nights and the weekend.

phatpho5

Menu here.

phatpho7

Pho Bo, classic Vietnamese beef soup with shaved US Angus beef.

phatpho8

Pho Xao, wok-fried noodles with chicken, prawns, egg oyster sauce and fresh herbs is one of their specialties and

phatpho1

Chicken Satay, skewered chicken pieces topped with garlic, shallots and peanuts. From my experience in Singapore, this is much fancier than their street food version of this (but then again, this is served in a restaurant) and I like the peanut sauce in Singapore more than the one served in Phat Pho. It still is tasty though and full of flavor with the different spices and the classic satay nuttiness.

phatpho3

We also had Crispy Egg Rolls, with pork, shrimp and noodles in basic egg/spring roll wrapper.

phatpho2

phatpho9

Phat Pho’s price range is quite reasonable ranging from Php 175.00 to 400.00.

phatpho4

Cebu’s The Crossroads is a very good place to visit for foodies. There are more restaurants in this area from Mexican to little breakfast shops to fine dining restaurants and dessert places. Tajimaya and Phat Pho is definitely a must visit if you haven’t still!

#032Mercado: Food Edition by @032Cebu

Zero Three Two is an online magazine which promotes everything and the latest happenings in Cebu. 032 is actually the area code for Cebu, if you’re wondering the importance. They’re also big on social media right now and are the most approachable and helpful people if you want to know anything about Cebu.

They’ve organised several events now and one of them is a bazaar they usually do during Christmas time. When I learned that they’ll be doing it just 10 minutes away from my house, I knew I had to go. As of writing, it’s still going on at The Outlets at Pueblo Verde near Mepz II in Lapu-lapu. It’s an event from December 12-14 and lasts until midnight.

outlet21

This year, they are promoting various food businesses from the local scene and I think that’s enough reason to go. It’s nice to support  our own and discover new things. The outlets at Pueblo Verde such as Adidas, Converse, Nike are giving out big discounts as well while the event is happening. You get to shop and eat food and listen to good music and chill with your friends with twinkling lights around you. Sounds good, yeah?

outlet22

The food stalls.

outlet7

Humay Gad! had some good stroganoff. My brother had to have two. A serving of the stroganoff is Php 75.00.

outlet20

Jose Fernando’s Cocina Mexicana was flocked by people. I was impressed with how they presented their business real well, they had their theme consistently. Food didn’t blow our minds but it was good nonetheless.

This was our complete “haul“. The best barbecue I’ve had in a long time, I tell you. Too bad I didn’t get to take pictures of them. (Maybe Zero Three Two will read this and tell me…..?) Their food stall was so busy, unsurprisingly. It’s a famous Filipino viand so it’s not really hard to find but trust me when I say, this one had better flavour than most of what I’ve tasted.

Next up, desserts!

outlet16

6075 Cafe sells layered desserts in a jar such as Smores and Blueberry Cheesecake. Hip and cute!

outlet15

outlet1

We ordered three for Php 110.00 each. Cookies n’ Cream was to die for as well as Bluberry Cheesecake. Smores is good as well but I have to rank that as third out of the three.

outlet19

Phoebe’s Cupcakery is a famous cupcake  shop in Cebu but I haven’t been so I got real excited to know that they were going to visit me instead! I mean, look at how pretty these are:

outlet17

outlet18

You can buy 3 cupcakes for Php 180.00 or 6 for Php 350.00. They also have their famous red velvet cupcake in jar form for Php 200.00.

Cinnabunny, Cookie Dough and Scarlette (Red Velvet)

outlet5

Good music while we ate by DJ Victor Jao.

All in all the experience was really good. Orders didn’t take too long, food was delicious yet cheap and everyone was just so friendly. I’ve heard and seen Christmas markets all over the world and this is the closest thing I’ve been to so good job, Zero Three Two! Helping the local community one step at a time. Looking forward to the next Christmas markets (and non-Christmas ones as well).

Brique Modern Kitchen, Cebu

Let’s have a break and a green tea KitKat from my Singapore travel diary. If you want to check them out and I know we’re both lazy, so I’ll be the bigger woman and link it here, here and here.

Anyways, with a good friend of mine, Jan and I went to new place last week which has been long postponed thanks to my mouth surgery shenanigans. It’s called Brique and without resorting to Google translate, I’m thinking it means brick because.. should I even explain? So I actually went to Google translate and guess what, it’s french for brick and the bricks all around the restaurant then made sense. What a fancy way of spelling brick though, I wish it has an accent like Beyoncé so it can level up even more. I mean, Briqué. Okay, let’s move on from my totally made up name issues, haha, I swear Brique knows what’s up and Brique is definitely catchy as is.

br1

Brique has crude, rough details with their interiors but keeps it really neat and elegant at the same time. Also, bricks but no I don’t have photos because I’m not your perfect bloggér. xxx

br3

br7

br8

Jan, my monthly food buddy

It is a two-storey place around Lahug area in Cebu, just 5 minutes away from IT Park. When you enter, (I’m sorry Brique, but you need to change your door, it’s going in so it clashes with people going out), if you’re lucky and you get a seat right away, they give you this little cork board with their menu clipped on it. I would say that their prices aren’t cheap but still affordable (if you got extra after you splurge all your payday moolah, that is).

br10

Jan decided for a Fish Fillet with Porcini Spinach Beurre Blanc and Asuete Ginger Chicken for me. Both of which are really delicious but not on the same genre. First things first, let’s dissect the fish fillet non-english terms, Beurre means butter, Blanc is white, Porcini is a mushroom and Spinach is Popeye’s you-know-what. And this is definition of heaven. Well one of, but it definitely tastes so good. It’s a perfect creamy dish with just the right herbs to spice it up. Mine was the Asuete Ginger Chicken which is a moderately spicy dish that goes with a soy lime glaze which really compliments the chicken. I have to say that the soy lime glaze defines the dish as it brings out the flavors and neutralizes the spiciness as well. You can get either rice or house salad to go with the entree. Their house salad is this simple yet appetizing greens with balsamic vinaigrette and it goes perfectly with both entrees.

br5

Fish Fillet with Porcini Spinach Beurre Blanc – Sautéed lamon-lamon fillet with Porcini mushrooms and spinach in a white wine butter cream sauce.

br4

Asuete Ginger Chicken – Grilled Asian spiced half chicken with soy lime glaze.

br6

OPM Blend smoothie (pineapple, mango and orange), ABC Twist (avocado, banana and coconut juice blended with spinach)

They also have healthy smoothies and we had OPM Blend as well as ABC Twist. Jan described OPM Blend as sweet but with the right kind of sour with it and ABC Twist for me is not the yummiest. I am obsessed with avocado but this smoothie was too bitter for me. I was waiting for a sweet kick but it never came. Maybe health enthusiast can appreciate it more because it really did taste healthy to me.

br2

Fudged S’mores – fudge brownie with graham cracker crust topped with torched mallows.

They had amazing dessert choices that we had a hard time choosing from them. I love how they’re not all chocolate so there’s obviously room for me. Fudged S’mores is sweet and although it serves for one, it can easily be for two people and it’s really really cheap. You can check out the rest of their menu here on their Facebook page.

All in all, Brique can definitely last in the Cebu food scene. It fits right into your typical weekday dinner out with your friends or a pre-party dine in during weekends and enjoy a bottle of wine.
