PxR Playlist of October 2014

I may have said last month that it went by so quickly but boy did October zoomed out of my mind. It was busy hence the few posts (I’m sorry). Nevertheless, music will never be out of our system so here’s your PxR playlist for October. If you’ll notice, this might seem like a 5 of a kind list but multiple good songs in one album or by one artist is rather rare and easy to obsess with.

octoberpxr

First off, I know I’m about a year late to this Naughty Boy hype. We’ve only listened to La La La which eventually made us obsessed with Sam Smith but never listened to the other side of the coin. Hotel Cabana is so good though and to list our favorites from the album:

Naughty Boy

Pardon Me (Lynx Peace Edition)

Lifted ft. Emeli Sandé

Wonder ft. Emeli Sandé

Think About It ft. Wiz Khalifa & Ella Eyre

Home ft. Sam Romans

Discovered Childish Gambino through “Heartbeat” from Paul and loved it, only to discover more that he’s Troy Barnes from my beloved show, Community. So yeah, the more reason for me to  check him out. He released his new album called Because The Internet and our favorites are:

Childish Gambino

What Kind Of Love

3005

candler road

telegraph ave.

Sober (from Kauai EP)

Paul is currently obsessed with Majid Jordan’s A Place Like This EP and I’m just getting into it but it is actually real good. Love at first listen basically.

Majid Jordan

Forever

All I Do

Her

U

A Place Like This

And good ones from various artists this month! Medicine has literally just been released a few hours ago but given it’s from The 1975, I know it’d be good and it is.

I’m quite half-hearted with All About That Bass (Paul loves it!), we should all stop body shaming but if it means putting down the other side of the spectrum, and shaming the ‘skinny bitches’ instead, how is it any better than fat shaming, really? But it’s catchy and apparently her saying “Nah, just playing” invalidates the skinny remark. Hmm don’t think so. Still, yay to giving confidence to millions of plus sized women. That’s good enough for me, I suppose.

Chris Brown may not be the best human being to exist but his tunes are good, don’t dislike the song, dislike the singer?

Ella Eyre’s acoustic of this EDM is so good. She took the song to another world.

Ella Eyre – Waiting All Night

Chris Brown – X

Chris Brown ft. Jhene Aiko – Drunk Texting

Meghan Trainor – All About That Bass

The 1975 – Medicine

Lastly, happy halloween everybody! See you again next month, hope you enjoy your new tunes!

Red Lips and Polaroids with Taylor Swift’s 1989

Taylor’s 1989 has existed for two days and for that two days, it was on repeat. I originally planned this to put in the PxR playlist but I literally can’t choose one song and I might end up making the whole October PxR playlist into one Taylor Swift post. After the hundredth time I’ve listened to this album and the thousands of thoughts that come with it naturally, I decided to make a separate /fangirl/ post about it. I’m not really a hardcore “Swiftie”, I’ve only listened to all of Fearless, all of Red and now 1989 plus the mainstream songs she had from her old albums when she had the curliest hair and smallest eyes. I haven’t read her Wikipedia page properly which is usually what I’d do when I obsess over someone. However, I’ve never disliked her despite the oh-my-god-she’s-writing-about-her-exes-again hate bandwagon. I mean, I’m pretty sure no one has the right to tell her who to date, what to write and whatnot. Other artists do it, Adele did it, Sara Bareilles did it (two of my favorites). Bruno Mars, Ed Sheeran and so many more probably do it but people don’t hate them for it so I don’t really see why there’s so much hate, she’s just another human being feeling hurt and she has songwriting to express that.

Anyways, her first full pop album just came out two days ago and everyone’s raving about it including me and rightly so. The songs have definitely matured and deviate from her previous albums. I can hear so many artists that could easily influence some of the songs and I love it. I love how the songs aren’t repetitive, unpredictable. So here goes my play by play…

Taylor_Swift_-_1989

Taylor Swift’s 1989 Album Cover credit

Welcome To New York

That synth takes me to the 90’s. I haven’t been actively listening to music back in the 80’s so I’m gonna say 90’s instead. It’s a great album opener, kind of like an appetizer. It isn’t heavy to the ears which makes it a safe way to not shock the listeners.

“And you can want who you want, boys and boys and girls and girls”

Blank Space

Easily one of my favorites from this album. I can hear i-know-we’re-cool era Gwen Stefani during the chorus, the bit about ex-lovers. This track is slowly getting heavy with production, slowly taking you to the pop world of Tay.

“Cause darling I’m a nightmare dressed like a daydream”

Style

I know, i know. Style.. Styles, how convenient! But how cool is the guitar intro though? It’s like a rock song waiting to happen but unfortunately didn’t, it does have some heavy bass which makes me think of sunset and travel and looking out from the train contemplating about life, also, Lady Gaga’s Do What U Want, kind of. I’m in love with the chorus. It’s catchy and the lyrics are easy to latch on to. It won’t get out of style soon.

“And when we go crashing down, we come back in every time”

Out Of The Woods

The intro is very The 1975. If you don’t know them, do check them out, they’re such an awesome band with similar tunes as this song, better even. The repetitive chorus will give you LSS no matter what. Taylor released this song after Shake It Off and it was very different which kind of gives you the idea of the massive deviation from her usual. This song has a very dark aura, like if you were running in a forest, lost and all, this would be your background music. I really appreciate her vocals in this as well. Her raspy tone during chorus and her usual belts, it’s just really different and I like it a lot.

“The rest of the world was black and white but we were in screaming color”

All You Had To Do Was Stay

Stay! Stay! Stay! Stay! Stay! Stay! Who can resist singing that high pitched stay? I can’t. Five songs in and you can hear the theme this album is going. It’s the creative pop that I like, not the garbage society pleaser ones. This song was an easy favorite, most probably because how catchy Stay! is.

“People like you always want back the love they gave away and people like me wanna believe you when you say you’ve changed”

Shake It Off

After listening to the whole album, I have to admit Shake It Off is the weakest and the most out of place. After that travel-contemplating-about-life friendly tunes, you get to this cheerdance song that you can’t help but dance to. The fact that I really liked this song and yet it’s the weakest says something for the rest of this album. I’m not saying this song is crap but in comparison to what comes before and after this one, this is nothing but a breather. The society pleaser one but not entirely trash. And Taylor will tell me, haters gonna hate hate hate. The message is excellent, though. I’ve got to give her credit for that. After all the hate and slut-shaming she’s had the past years, this song is just an indirect middle finger to them all.

“I’m lightning on my feet and that’s what they don’t see”

I Wish You Would

Aaaaand back to regular programming. Her heavy-bass-pop-beats are back in this song continuing her album theme. Jack Antonoff co-wrote this song and if you look into his songwriting credits, you’d know he write great songs.

“Wish you were right here, right now, it’s all good, I wish you would”

Bad Blood

The multiple Taylor Swift with the heavy bass pumping during the chorus feels like a hundred witches asking for blood sacrifice. This song’s scary but it’s scary fun.

“I was thinking that you could be trusted, did you have to ruin what was shining now it’s all rusted”

Wildest Dreams

This is such a dreamy song, feeling the desperation and infatuation that defines the song. It’s like a desperate call to resist going back to a bad relationship, as if she’s doing something illegal.

How You Get The Girl

Not one of the strong songs. At this point, I feel like I’ve been worn out by the techno, heavy bass, pop beats that is present in most of the songs. It fits but it’s not something I’d rave about for days.

“I want you for worse or for better, I would wait forever and ever”

This Love

A slow one this time. Something you’d listen during down and painful days. One of the best tracks. It’s haunting and just plain beautiful.

I Know Places

A song that could fit right into a romantic, dark fiction. Like Mockingjay perhaps. Can you hear the awesome bassline in this one? Ah ah ah I, ah ah ah I definitely can.

“They are the hunters, we are the foxes”

Clean

This song is so familiar, like I’ve heard it before. I can’t think of a song but I know this one can be influenced by some other song. I love the lyrics though. It’s tragically and ironically beautiful. And it’s co-written by Imogen Heap, how awesome is that? This song has such a clean and creative production.

“When I was drowning, that’s when I could finally breathe”

Wonderland

I can hear old Taylor in this, something from Red. This one reminds me of I Knew You Were Trouble. Do you think that as well? I think this is the twin song but with the magical aura due to the twinkling bits.

“You searched the world for something else to make you feel like what we had”

You Are In Love

This is a continuation of This Love, it’s slow  with a heavy chorus but calming still. It’s like a dark awakening to something beautiful that is being in love.

“You can see it with the lights out, lights out, you are in love, true love”

New Romantics

A fun song and such a great song to be given the last spot. I can hear Fergie’s Glamorous in the stanzas and Foster The People in the chorus and I’m in love with it as much as I’ve been in love with all Foster The People songs.

“And please leave me stranded, it’s so romantic”

All in all, 1989 is a fun light techno, heavy bass, full on pop album. It has its highs and lows, but all songs are something you can listen to. It might not be on the all-time favorites list but I’d say her decision to take on the road of full pop is not a mistake. The production and lyrics and everything is just right. It’s overwhelmingly good.

And for the funof it, this is my take on the album cover if I had one. I finally given this lost OOTD photo a purpose. Ha!

A Day Up In The Air and Under Water

Hello buddies! Quite a while since I last posted something, I was just having a major life crisis. But I’m back and hopefully you’re still there doing good both in your real and virtual lives. Anyways, last summer (April, I know, I know, this is months late!) Paul visited Cebu and we had a whole month to go ’round town which I will be blogging about for the next few days. The first of which is an adventure day filled with seawater, unexpected fear of heights and jet skis!

swim10

It was Easter Sunday when we went and there were lots of people but we managed to enjoy our day still which is pretty easy around Mactan, a historic resort city. There are numerous white sand beaches and excellent Filipino restaurants in this island so if you want a last-minute getaway to the beach, you’ll have it easy  in Mactan.

Mactan or Lapu-lapu City is where both Paul and I met and went to the same school back in the 90’s. It’s a little island attached by two bridges to the mainland Queen City of the South, Cebu! Well, Mactan is still part of the Cebu province and it certainly contributes to how great tourism is here since, as I’ve said, it has accessible beaches which accommodate all types of people with all types of preferences and all types of budget!

The day we went, it was rather bright but not sunny so the series of photos you’ll see is sepia-ed of some sort. I hope you don’t mind!IMG_4385

The resort we went to is called Vista Mar Beach Resort & Country Club. It has a coastline and three pools so you have your choice as to where you want to swim. Sometimes, the beach area doesn’t get to that sea level from the photo above especially when it’s low tide so having pools ! It is not the best in the island but it’s definitely not the worst. I would say, if it’s a last minute decision then this is one of the resorts you can go to. They have a consumable entrance fee and rooms you can rent, they have their website here.

One of the main reasons why I chose Vista Mar is because I knew they had water sports services and Paul was just itching to go jet ski and parasail and every water sport you can offer him. It is rather pricey in here but comparing to other resorts, this is one on the cheaper range. There are lots to choose from but my family didn’t want to go ride the banana boat with us so we decided to just go for a jet ski and parasailing.

swim2

Like what I’ve posted back in Alton Towers, I have a fear for things that are controlled by non-experts so the whole jet ski ride, I was freaking out and telling Paul to slow down and speed up again and then slow down again. He is an adrenaline junkie and when you ride those waves, you’ll literally jump with the jet ski and that is scary but fun. You also have to be mindful of other people in their own jet skis (there weren’t many at that time we did it, thankfully) or people on a boat who are island hopping. Not to worry though, the playground, or should I say, the playsea is vast and colliding isn’t really going to happen unless you lose out of control. You are both required to wear life jackets in case your ski shuts down or you flip or whatever it is that happens. It’s also definitely a must for both of us because despite being island kids, we’re both incapable of swimming. I can do the simple floating technique as if the sea is your bed and whatnot but that’s just not gonna save me against sharks.

swim15

Parasailing starts in a speed boat far far far away from the coastline. A guide will drive you (through a jet ski) to the speedboat in the middle of the ocean, you transfer and you get hooked to this massive parachute. Both of us were excited because we’ve never experienced this before.

swim14

Attentively listening to instructions and warnings. Look at our concentration faces, or maybe that’s just the sun blinding us.

The speed boat speeds up and off you go up in the air!

The excitement quickly died down once we were up dangling high above and  I started feeling motion sickness. It windy and getting blown away up there was frightening! I could barely film anything as I was scared of dropping the GoPro and I was busy holding my harness tight. I initially thought that you have a seat included in the harness but your bum’s actually dangling as well. The only parts of you supported is your thighs which will eventually make you “sit”.

My motion sickness never went away but the view was beyond awesome! If you’d like to see it, watch the video I’ll be embedding down below.

We spent 15 minutes in the air, thankfully we didn’t push through with our original plan which was to get the 30 minute ride deal because 15 minutes was definitely too much for me. You’d think 15 minutes is short but you’re literally sitting high above with nothing else to do but sightseeing and contemplate about life perhaps but 15 minutes is definitely more than enough.

swim5

Once our time was up, the boat pulling us slowed down and this caused for the chute to go down as well which then caused for us to be dipped in the water and up again and dipped again and up again until we’re close enough to the boat where we can be safe again. All in all, it’s an experience worth a go but it’s not something I’d be doing again unless we’re in another island for another view to see.

Back to the boat!

Layered Chocolate & Cream Gelatin (Black Sambo)

Black Sambo is famous among Filipino gatherings. I don’t think it has an equivalent name in other countries, if you search it online, it’ll mostly direct you to Filipino blogs and the like. That’s why I decided to “rename” it as per the title to let you have a basic understanding on what it is. Black Sambo doesn’t really give you much but Layered Chocolate & Cream Gelatin does. If you have read my past blog posts, you’ll know that I’m quite the fan of literals. Just trying to be honest, eh?

But I digress. Let’s start the sambo mambo wambo jambo!

What you need:

Cream Layer

300mL Condensed Milk

300g Cream

2 envelopes of Unflavored Knox Gelatine

Chocolate Layer

300mL Condensed Milk

300g Cream

1/2 cup White Sugar

1/4 cup Cocoa Powder

4 envelopes of Unflavored Knox Gelatin Powder

Mixing bowl

Sifter

How to:

Before I start, if you read through the ingredients again, both layers have similar base which is condensed milk plus cream. The only difference is the added cocoa powder to the chocolate layer. Traditionally, my family would use evaporated milk for the chocolate layer but I’m not a fan of chocolate, more so if it’s a bitter one so I found that instead of evaporated milk, I just use the same ingredients for the cream layer and add cocoa to it which makes it a lot less bitter without fully eliminating the cocoa flavor. Also, using the same base makes this recipe a simpler!

Moving on, here we go.

Cream Layer

1. Mix the condensed milk and cream in a mixing bowl.

mixcream

2. Dissolve 2 envelopes of the Knox gelatin powder in a 3/4 cup hot water.

knox

3. Combine both mixture from step 1 and 2 but use a sifter when adding the dissolved Knox to the cream + milk.

4. Put this in a pan or an aluminum container and let it cool.

Chocolate Layer

1. Go over step 1 from the cream layer again, mixing 300 mL of condensed milk with 300 g of cream.

2. Mix 1/4 cup of cocoa powder with 1/2 cup of sugar, both dry.

cocoa

drymix

3. Add hot water just enough that it dissolves both cocoa powder and sugar, about 1/4 cup.

mixcocoa

4. Dissolve another 2 envelopes of Knox gelatin powder with 3/4 cup hot water. Same as you did on step 2 for cream layer.

5. Mix all three, condensed + cream, cocoa + sugar, and dissolved knox. Make sure you use a sifter when adding each of the mixtures so that you won’t have clumps of gelatin nor clumps of cream in your layer.

Can you hear this gif go boing boing boing boing boing boing? No? Okay bye, Elsa!

Cream + Chocolate Layer

Once the cream layer or whichever layer you did first has cooled down, add your second layer. Make sure that the first layer hasn’t completely turned into a glossy gelatin layer because then both layers will separate as a finish product. The first layer should just be cooled enough that the second layer won’t mix with it anymore. About 30 to 45 minutes from the time you put it in the pan.

So here’s the finish product, I added bits of chocolate on top of it and some melted ones for presentation purposes but it’s definitely delicious on its own.
